Why it sounds like that
The C chromatic scale contains all twelve pitches, each a half step apart. It extends the C bebop dominant scale, which omits C♯, D♯, F♯, G♯, and A♯. With every note available, the scale has no tonal center. See C bebop dominant for the parent scale.
When to use it
C chromatic is the default for chromatic runs in C major or C minor. It works in walking bass over C major or C minor progressions. Use it in blues for chromatic approaches to the fifth.
Which position to practise
Learn Box 1 first: the root is on string 3, fret 3, and the shape spans frets 0–3. It keeps the hand low and prepares the shift to Box 3.
