Why it sounds like that

F diminished is built from the root, a minor third, and a diminished fifth. The diminished fifth from F to C♭ gives the chord its tense, unstable quality. Raising the fifth by one semitone produces F minor, the closest stable contrast.

What goes wrong with F diminished?

• Letting the ring finger flatten and deaden the E string next to it.
• Pressing the pinky off-center on the C string, causing a buzz at the 5th fret.

When to use it

F diminished suits tense, suspenseful passages in jazz and classical styles. Use it to lead into A♭ major or A♭ minor.

Changing to and from F diminished

• Sliding the shape down one fret to the 1st fret gives E diminished.
• From F minor, lift the pinky and shift the middle finger from the 4th fret of the G string to the 4th fret of the C string.

Which voicing to use

The 2nd fret position with F in the bass is the most balanced and easiest to play. The Fdim/A♭ inversion places A♭ in the bass, creating a darker sound that works well before a chord with B♭ or C in the bass.
