Why it sounds like that

C 5th uses the formula 1, 5, so it contains only the root C and its perfect 5th G. The perfect 5th interval gives the chord its open, stable sound. Compare it with C major, which adds the major 3rd E.

What goes wrong with C 5th?

• The index finger flattens onto the C string and mutes the open note.
• The middle finger does not press firmly enough on the A string, causing a buzz.
• The open G string is accidentally covered by the palm when strumming.

When to use it

C 5th works as a power chord in C major progressions like C–F–G, the I–IV–V. It suits folk, rock, and pop when you want a simple, strong sound. Use it to replace C major in a band mix.
