Why it sounds like that

D major is built from the formula 1, 3, 5 — root D, major 3rd F♯, and perfect 5th A. The major 3rd between D and F♯ gives the chord its bright quality. Compare it to D minor, which lowers the 3rd to F.

What goes wrong with D major?

• The index finger barre may not press hard enough, causing the G or C string to buzz.
• The open A string may be accidentally muted by the barre finger touching it.

When to use it

Use it in the I–IV–V–I progression: D major–G major–A major–D major. It also appears in the I–V–vi–IV progression: D major–A major–B minor–G major. The chord suits folk, pop, and rock strumming.

Changing to and from D major

• From D major to G major, keep the barre shape and move it to the 3rd fret, then add the ring finger on the 2nd fret of the A string.
• From D major to E major, slide the barre up two frets to the 4th fret and place the middle finger on the 4th fret of the G string.

Which voicing to use

The open position is the easiest and most common shape. The Dmaj/F♯ inversion at the 7th fret places F♯ in the bass for a brighter sound. The Dmaj/A inversion at the 11th fret has A in the bass, giving a fuller, more grounded tone.
